Michael P. Richman, a Member of Richman & Richman LLC, has been named a 2025 “Lawyer of the Year” for Litigation – Bankruptcy in Madison by The Best Lawyers in America®. This prestigious recognition, based on the achievement of the highest average scores among Madison lawyers, as provided through client and peer reviews, highlights Richman’s experience, skills and dedication to excellence.
The Best Lawyers in America®, now in its 31st edition, acknowledges excellence throughout the legal profession. This year, its rigorous selection process involved over 116,000 vetted nominees, 28,000 voters, 3.2 million new peer evaluations, and 23 million historical evaluations. This intense process ensured that only the most respected and skilled attorneys made the publication’s list—just 5.7% of lawyers nationwide. Of these, only the lawyer who received the highest average votes in a particular region and practice is named “Lawyer of the Year.”
In addition to being named Best Lawyers® 2025 Lawyer of the Year, Litigation – Bankruptcy in Madison, Richman was recognized as a “Best Lawyer” in Bankruptcy and Creditor/Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law, as well as Litigation – Banking and Finance, and Litigation – Bankruptcy.
These honors are the latest in a long and notable legal career that has spanned more than 40 years, starting when Richman graduated from Columbia University School of Law in 1979. After a lengthy career in bankruptcy and litigation practice with a few large New York firms, he moved to Wisconsin, and has continued his practice in Madison since 2018. He continues to represent clients in the federal and state courts in New York, as well as in Wisconsin, and has appeared in courts in over 20 states.
Richman served as President of the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) (2004-05), as an ABI Director from 1996 to 2008, chairman of its board from 2006 to 2007, and membership in its management and executive committees. He also chaired the Section 363 Subcommittee of ABI’s National Commission to Reform Chapter 11 and co-vice chaired ABI’s National Ethics Task Force, significantly contributing to developing and reforming bankruptcy law and ethics. In Madison, in addition to his full-time practice with Richman & Richman, he teaches bankruptcy law as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School, and is Chair of the Board of the Madison Symphony Orchestra.
